Established as a Public Limited Company in 1890, Tyroon Tea Company Limited was founded with the primary aim of acquiring the business of M/s. George Frederick Pinney. In 1960, McLeod & Co. Ltd. assumed the role of Managing Agents of the Company, and as of August 15, 1960, they were designated as the Secretaries & Treasurers of the Company. They managed the Company until the abolition of the Managing Agency and Secretaries & Treasurers system in April 1970. Since then, the Company has been managed by its Board of Directors. A K Jalan, the current promoter of the Company, acquired shares from McLeod & Co. Ltd. in 1988 and has since been involved in the Company's management and operations.
The primary business activity of the Company revolves around tea plantation and processing, with its flagship Tyroon tea estate located in Assam. The tea factory at the estate has an installed capacity to produce 1,061,617 kilograms per annum of made tea. The Company sells its products primarily through auctions, with the remainder distributed through its wholesale outlets in Bombay, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Allahabad, and other locations.
To modernize and expand its tea divisions and processing facilities, the Company embarked on an expansion-cum-modernization program. This initiative increased the capacity to manufacture made tea to 1.75 million kilograms per annum. In February 1995, the Company conducted a public issue to partially finance this project. Additionally, it introduced poly pouches as a new packaging option for its products.
