Prima Agro traces its roots to the entrepreneurial vision of Mr. Sajjan Kumar Gupta's family, who relocated from Rajasthan to Cochin approximately 50 years ago. Mr. Gupta, inheriting a business acumen from his family's background in Flour Mills, diversified his interests over time. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Gupta family operated flour mills across India and actively traded commodities and related products. Subsequent family partitions allowed individual brothers to establish their own business entities.
Upon settling in Kerala, Mr. Gupta pivoted away from flour milling and ventured into manufacturing, utilizing agro-based materials as primary resources. Leveraging the abundance of diversified agro resources in Kerala and neighboring regions, he expanded into animal feeds, edible oil solvent extraction, refining, and packaging. Additionally, he ventured into medium-scale beverage production, partnering with the Parle Group for bottled drinking water.
Over the years, Prima Agro benefited from the expertise of professionals and entrepreneurs who contributed to its growth. Notable contributions came from finance and technology management experts, as well as the Agarwal family (Surya Group) renowned for mega textile projects in Hyderabad, who assisted in shaping the corporate vision and mission.
In the early 1990s, Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Mr. Sajjan Kumar Gupta's son, joined the family business after completing his commerce education. Prima Agro went public in 1993, with its shares listed on major stock exchanges across India.
