It is already known that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will attend the meeting on behalf of Germany.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer will also attend the meeting near the Swiss city of Lucerne on June 15-15, the chancellor in Vienna confirmed.

Nehmer described the conference as an important step towards making peace possible again.

"Peace needed a broad coalition of allies, even outside the EU's European chambers," he said.

The summit, organized by Switzerland at the request of Ukraine, aims to garner more international support for the country currently facing attack from Russia.

Ukraine is hoping to convince neutral countries or states in the global South that are friendly with Russia that its position is correct. China is being especially honoured.

It aims to include around 80 countries in the summit. This first step is not about negotiations with Russia; Moscow has not been invited and has declined participation.

“Russian aggression has tried to turn the UN Charter into a museum piece,” Zelensky said in Kiev.

“Our peace summit and the participation of leading politicians from around the world can restore the UN Charter to full effectiveness and full protection for all countries.”

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian aggression for more than two years.

In addition to annexing the Crimea peninsula in 2014, Moscow has declared four other Ukrainian regions part of its territory.
