This is 51-year-old Kumar's second foray into politics and the state leadership of the party is expected to approve Kumar's post in its upcoming meeting.

While heading Reporter TV channel in 2016, CPI-M fielded him from Azhikode assembly seat in his home town Kannur, but he lost to IUML's sitting MLA K.M.Shaji by about 2200 votes.

After his defeat, he returned to hold the top position at the channel and has now left the position.

Kumar's entry into full-time CPI-M politics comes at a time when the party and government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is facing criticism from various district party committees over its debacle in the Lok Sabha elections.
