Ranchi, May 30 (A 60-year-old man was beaten to death by a group of women on suspicion of practicing black magic in a village in Jharkhand's Ranchi district. A police officer gave this information on Thursday.

He said five women aged between 30 and 50 were arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case.

“The old man, identified as Baleshwar Oraon, was beaten to death with rods by the women on suspicion of practicing black magic. They also assaulted Etwari Devi,” said Angara police station in-charge Chamra Minj.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Jarga Tetartoli village under Angara police station area, about 25 km from Ranchi, when the victim allegedly entered a neighbour's house and went near the sleeping girl and performed black magic on her.

As soon as the girl started screaming, the women of the village gathered there and started beating her. When his wife tried to intervene, the women beat her, too, Minz said.

“The superstition among these women is so strong that they believe that if Oraon sees anyone, he will die. Two years ago, a person had died and the woman blamed him for it,” he said.
