Thane: Police have registered a case against four unidentified persons for allegedly defrauding a 37-year-old woman from Airoli in Navi Mumbai of over Rs 54 lakh online, an official said on Tuesday.

Based on the complaint of the victim, who is a pregnant woman, the cyber police on Saturday registered an FIR under sections 419 (cheating), 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). and the Information Technology Act, the official said.

The accused offered the victim the freelance job of rating companies and restaurants and said that if she completed five such tasks, she could earn a good amount. He took over the work and as per his instructions, paid Rs 54,30,000 into various accounts for the work given to him.

The complaint states that all this happened between May 7 and 10.

After completing the task, when the victim asked for the promised remuneration, the accused stopped responding to her calls. He soon realized he had been duped and contacted the police, the officer said.

The officer said the victim, who was at home on maternity leave, did not want to use the time for online work and wanted to earn some income. However, he lost his entire money due to fraudsters, police said.

He said that the cyber police is investigating the crime.
