Los Angeles, Hollywood star Will Smith is in talks to lead an upcoming sci-fi thriller film for Sony Pictures.

The film, titled "Resistor," is based on bestselling author Daniel Suarez's 2014 book "Influx," reports entertainment news outlet Deadline.

"Bullet Train" writer Jack Olkiewicz wrote the first draft, while Eric Singer wrote the latest draft. Currently there is no director associated with this project.

The film's plot is currently under wraps but "Influx" takes place in a dystopian society in which the government uses questionable tactics to stop technological progress.

The story primarily focuses on physicist John Grady and his team who discover a device that can reflect gravity – a triumph that will revolutionize the field of physics and change the future. But instead of praise, Grady's lab is shut down by a secret organization called the Bureau of Technology Control.

"Resistor" will be produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Escape Artist's Tony Shaw, who have been developing the project for years with Smith and John Mone through Westbrook.

Smith recently collaborated with Sony Pictures for the fourth installment of the smash hit action franchise "Bad Boys", in which she headlines alongside Martin Lawrence.

The fourth film, titled "Bad Boys: Ride or Die", was released earlier this month and has grossed US$215.5 million globally so far.
