Korba, A 50-year-old woman was crushed to death by a wild elephant in Korba district of Chhattisgarh on Monday. A forest officer gave this information.

He said the attack took place in the Kudamura forest area in the morning.

The victim, Yado Bai Kanwar, and her husband Vriksha Ram Kanwar were going to nearby Girari village when they encountered an elephant, the officer said.

The husband managed to escape, but the elephant caught hold of the victim and crushed her to death, she said.

The man alerted villagers and officials, following which forest and police personnel reached the spot, the official said.

The official said immediate relief amount of Rs 25,000 was given to the families of the deceased and the remaining compensation of Rs 5.75 lakh will be given after completing the necessary formalities.

Human-elephant conflict in the state, especially in the northern part, has been a cause of concern for the last decade.

Surguja, Raigarh, Korba, Surajpur, Mahasamund, Dhamtari, Gariaband, Balod and Balrampur are some of the districts facing this threat.

According to the Forest Department, about 260 people have died in elephant attacks in the state in the last three years.
