According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, there has been a decline in the prices of non-food items (-1.19 percent) and minerals (-1.55 percent) in April.

Sanjeev Aggarwal, president of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said WPI inflation remains benign, supported by negative inflation in non-food items and manufacturing products.

“Despite global headwinds, the WPI inflation trajectory in fuel and energy also remains low at 1.38 per cent in April 2024. However, WPI inflation in food items remained at 7.74 per cent in April, compared to 6.8 per cent in March. Aggarwal gave information.

Going forward, inflation in food items is expected to moderate by September/October 2024, Agarwal said, "as several kharif crops will enter the market and supplement existing supplies."

The WPI food index showed an upward trend with inflation increasing from 4.65 percent in March to 5.52 percent in April.

Meanwhile, consumer price inflation (CPI) fell to an 11-month low of 4.8 percent in April.

According to industry watchers, the timely arrival of monsoon and “good distribution” will be crucial to help control food inflation in the coming months.
