New Delhi, The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will decide the selection criteria to choose the Indian team for the Paris Olympics on May 21, it has been revealed from reliable sources.

India has earned six quota places for the Summer Games, five of which came from women wrestlers. Aman Sehrawat is the only male wrestler to secure a quota in the men's freestyle 57 kg category.

The WFI had said it would hold a final trial to select the wrestler who will represent the country at the Paris Games starting on July 26.

As per the criteria mentioned earlier, it was said that the wrestlers who finished in the top four in the final trials would compete against each other and the group winners would take on the quota winners."WFI has called a selection committee meeting in Delhi on May 21 to decide on the selection criteria. Two head coaches in both the styles (men's freestyle and women's) will be part of the discussion," a WFI source said.

It will be interesting to see whether the WFI selection committee decides to go ahead with the trials or ask the quota winners to compete at the Games.

If the quota winners are cleared for the competition, it will mean the end of Pari's dream for wrestlers like Ravi Dahiya (men's 57kg) and Sarita Mor (women's 57kg) as they face a final shot at selection. Will be missed.

At the Tokyo Games, four quota winners – Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Rao Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat – were allowed to retain their spots in their respective categories. They were not tested near the games.

India has five women wrestlers, led by veteran Vinesh Phogat (50kg), competing for medals.

Anhalt Panghal (53kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg) and Ritika Hood (76kg) are the other women wrestlers to qualify for the quota.

The general feeling is that there is no need for trials so close to the Games.

Tests are not required in all categories

,

Dronacharya Award winner Lalit Kumar, who is the head coach of Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium, explained why trials are not required."Most of our wrestlers have qualified recently. It is not like they have qualified just a year ago and their fitness and form needs to be assessed. Sometimes wrestlers lose form or get injured, So you need to assess them, whether they are the best contenders for India in their category because athletes can really hide their injuries.

“So in this case, five out of six wrestlers have earned the quota in less than a month. They were the best in their categories, so they won the trials held in Bishkek and Istanbul. He said, "So his fitness and form is in front of everyone. Yes, for a player like Antti Panghal, who qualified for the World Championships last year, the WFI needs to know if he has any injury, it is not required for others. "

Aman has also expressed concern about the tests and said that it is time to focus on preparing for the Games and not get ready for another painful process of weight loss.

Vinesh Phogat, in a post on X, also sought clarity on what the WF actually wants to do with the tests.

A section within the WFI also believes that there is no need for trials at this stage when the Games are just two months away.
