Kolkata, West Bengal Panchayat and Rural Development Department said on Friday that it plans to set up a marketing board dedicated to capacity building of self-help groups and farmer producer organizations (FPOs).

A senior official of the department also emphasized his keenness to work towards rural development, particularly for prosperous FPOs and SHGs, to reinforce the state's livelihood mission and women empowerment initiatives.

"We are planning to set up a marketing board dedicated to capacity building of FPOs and SHGs," said P Ulaganathan, Secretary, Department of Panchayat and Rural Development, addressing the 'Krishi Sanlaap 2024' organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. of Bengal. (BCCI).

He highlighted product development aligned with market demand and “marketing support” as the key to the success of FPOs and SHGs.

Ulaganathan also spoke in favor of closer collaboration with partners like PRADAN and BCCI to explore ways to propagate and develop more sustainable FPOs and SHGs.

He informed that 40 per cent of the FPOs are currently active and the government aims to increase the number to accelerate rural development.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in December 2022 between his department's West Bengal State Rural Livelihood Mission (WBSRLM) and e-commerce marketplace Flipkart.

The association aims to empower women self-help groups, artisans and weavers in the state by facilitating access to the national market and promoting sustainable economic growth.

'Flipkart Samarth' and WBSRLM will collaborate to foster entrepreneurship among SHGs, provide assistance in bringing them into the online marketplace and offer support as they develop the necessary skills to leverage digital platforms for new businesses and commercial opportunities.
