According to the media report published on June 30, 2024, allegations of a love affair between the victim couple were discussed in an open meeting (Panchayat) by the upset villagers after the miscreants started beating up the duo. .

The main perpetrator is reportedly related to the political party in power in West Bengal and in the viral video he can be seen brutally beating the couple, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.

The Commission has observed that the content of the news, if true, raises a serious issue of violation of the couple's human rights.

Accordingly, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of West Bengal Police, seeking a detailed report on the matter within a week.

It should include the status of the police investigation into the matter, the health status of the victims and any medical treatment, if any, provided to them.

The Commission would also like to know the measures taken or proposed by the state government to ensure that such incidents of violation of human rights of citizens, by politically protected goons, are not repeated.

The Commission, examining the seriousness of the matter, has also directed its Director General (Investigation) to immediately constitute and dispatch a team, headed by an officer not below the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police, to visit the site of the incident to conduct an investigation. on-site investigation into the matter and submit a report to the Commission as soon as possible.

While issuing the notifications, the Commission has further observed that the cruel and shameful act reported by the miscreants in the present incident without any fear of law indicates that the State authorities have not learned any lesson, even from the shameful incidents that occurred in the past nor of the concern raised by the National Human Rights Commission.

The Commission has observed that this is not an isolated incident that occurred recently in the state of West Bengal, where unruly elements have taken the law into their hands, victimizing innocent people, especially women.

Apart from this, the Commission has also taken cognizance of the shameful incidents of indignity against women that occurred in Sandeshkhali area of ​​North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, in which a man allegedly associated with a political party subjected the women to sexual abuse and torture. .
