A 23-year-old man died at a hospital in Jhargram district of Kolkata, West Bengal, a week after he was beaten by some people.

This is the third death in a mob attack in the state. Two other similar incidents took place in Kolkata and Salt Lake on June 28 and 29.

On June 22, locals found an injured Saurabh Sao lying on the road in Jamboni area near Jhargram city. He was admitted to a hospital where he died on Sunday.

Police registered a case against unknown persons on June 27 based on a complaint lodged by Sao's family.

However, his family alleged that he was attacked by a group of people employed by a contractor, who alleged that Sau had tried to steal parts of an earth mover parked on the roadside.

He claimed that Saav had gone out on his two-wheeler for some work and while returning he was resting under a tree. The earth mover machine was standing nearby.

On Saturday, a man named Prasen Mandal died after being beaten by a mob in Salt Lake, while on Friday, Irshad Alam, a TV mechanic, was beaten to death in a government student hostel in Kolkata's Bowbazar area.

Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said, "Mass hysteria can be countered only through mass consultation".

Union minister Sukant Majumdar, who is also the state BJP president, criticized the TMC government, alleging that it has failed to control such crimes.
