Patna, Bihar government on Thursday asked district administrations to remain alert as the water level of many rivers is rising following continuous rains in the last two-three days.

Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of Disaster Management Department (DMD) Pratyaya Amrit held a virtual review meeting with the concerned officials of almost all the districts and took information about the situation at various places in the state.

According to a statement issued by the DMD, he directed officials to "be alert and fully prepared to deal with the situation if the water level rises further".

Almost all the rivers are maintaining an increasing trend in their flow, due to which low-lying areas are flooded.

However, state Water Resources Department (WRD) officials said there was "no alarming situation in the state as of now".

Officials said the situation is critical in East Champaran, Gopalganj and West Champaran districts as several rivers, including Gandak and Budhi Gandak, are either flowing above their danger level or near the danger mark at some places.

"No casualties have been reported so far and villagers in low-lying areas in some areas of East and West Champaran districts have been shifted to safer places by the local administration," one of the officials said.

Due to rain in the last few days, the water level of Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Budhi Gandak, Mahananda and Kamala rivers has increased in the state.

Rivers are also flowing above the danger mark at some places in Bagaha, Purnia, Supaul, Darbhanga, Khagaria and Jhanjharpur.

Keeping in mind the seriousness of the situation, authorities in Bihar on Thursday removed some gates of the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river. This triggered a rapid flow of water, which reached a peak of 2.33 lakh cusecs during the day. “1.73 lakh cusecs of water was released from Kosi Birpur barrage till 2 pm,” another official said.
