The Union Cabinet recently approved the Rs 76.22-crore port at Vadhavan in Palghar district of Maharashtra.

During an interaction with IANS, Sanjay Bansode said that the project will boost industrial development and also generate employment opportunities.

"I sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet as the development of Vadhavan port will provide huge employment opportunities to the local people during the construction phase and operation phase. Many posts including drivers, mechanics , painters, carpenters and electricians. Security guards and computer operators will be created for the less educated. In addition, there will be enormous opportunities for the more educated in the field of management, engineering and others," said the Minister.

He said it will further boost industrial development due to multiple business opportunities in its surroundings and also in the surrounding areas of the state.

"Vadhavan port will be a game-changer for Maharashtra and will help the state achieve its ambitious goal of a $1 trillion economy," the Minister said.

Despite a series of talks between the Maharashtra government and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and also the recent public hearing, a section of the villagers and the fishing community are strongly opposing the development of the port. When asked how he plans to address his concerns, Sanjay Bansode said: "There is no opposition to the development of the port. The Chief Minister, two Deputy Chief Ministers and I have held several meetings with the farmers and the fishing community.

"Those talks were quite positive. The project will certainly help Maharashtra's growth reach a new level. The government is committed to addressing the concerns raised by those opposed to the project. I request you to extend your cooperation in the development of the port in Vadhavan. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has provided training to aspiring fishermen to enhance their skills. This is an ongoing program as interested people can take advantage of this training," he told IANS.

The Minister also said that the Shankhodhar Shrine, a place of worship of the locals, will be preserved. His assurance on the matter came after villagers expressed concern that the Shankhodhar Shrine, dedicated to Lord Ram, was damaged due to the port development project.

"It is far from the port project site and there will be no risk to the Shankhodhar sanctuary," he said.

"Also, let me clarify that there is no proposal to establish a crude oil refinery in the master plan of the port project. In fact, crude oil refining was never thought of. It is requested that no one notice this. There is so much propaganda false in this regard," the Minister said, upon learning that villagers oppose the "proposed" crude oil refinery there.
