There are 12 candidates in the running for 11 seats.

The quota of winners for the elections is set at 23, as the current strength of the 288-member Assembly is 274.

Counting will begin at 5 p.m. and the result is expected late Friday night.

Ruler MahaYuti has fielded 9 nominees, while Maha Vikas Aghadi has fielded three.

A cross vote was feared due to haggling. However, both MahaYuti and MVA took due precautions to avoid this as they kept their respective legislators in various five-star hotels in the city and took them to the legislature in special buses.

The BJP has fielded five candidates, including former minister Pankaja Munde, former state ministers Parinay Fuke and Sadabhau Khot, former state youth wing chief Yogesh Tilekar and party functionary Amit Gorkhe. The Shiv Sena nominated former MPs Krupal Tumane and Bhavan Gawli, while the NCP nominated Rajesh Vitekar and Shivajirao Garje.

The Congress has reappointed Pradnya Satav, wife of former MP Rajiv Satav, while the Shiv Sena-UBT has fielded Milind Narvekar, a close confidant of party chief Uddhav Thackeray. Outgoing Peasants and Workers Party legislator Jayant Patil entered the fray with the support of the NCP-SP.

The BJP has 103 legislators, so the party is quite confident in the election of its five candidates. The Shiv Sena, with its 37 legislators and the support of 10 independents, is certain of the victory of two candidates. Furthermore, the NCP, with its 39 legislators, does not see any problem in the victory of its two candidates.

Congress is confident in the victory of its only candidate with its 37 legislators. Incidentally, PWP's Patil and Shiv Sena-UBT candidate Narvekar have excess votes from the Congress and also the support of 15 Shiv Sena-UBT legislators and 13 NCP-SP legislators.

The biennial elections were necessitated by the retirement of 11 MLC members: Manisha Kayande (Shiv Sena), Anil Parab (Shiv Sena-UBT), Vijay Girkar, Nilay Naik, Ramesh Patil, Ramrao Patil (BJP), Abdullah Durrani (NCP ), Wajahat Mirza and Pragya Satav (Congress), Mahadev Jankar (RSP) and Jayant Patil (PWP).
