Kolkata: In the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting started on Friday at 7 am on three seats in North West Bengal.

He said that voting will continue till 6 pm in Darjeeling, Balurghat and Raiganj constituencies.

A total of 47 candidates, including state BJP president Sukant Majumdar, are in the fray for the three seats, whose fate will be decided by 51.17 lakh people.

A total of 5,298 polling stations have been set up in the three constituencies.

Officials said there are 1,999 polling stations in Darjeeling, 1,730 in Raiganj and 1,569 in Balurghat.

A total of 272 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) or 27,200 personnel as well as 12,983 state police personnel have been deployed for this phase of elections, he said.

In the 2019 elections, BJP had won all three seats. While Majumdar won the Balurghat seat, Raju Bista clinched the Darjeeling constituency – and both are seeking re-election for a second term from these constituencies.

Debashree Chaudhary had won from Raiganj seat, but this time BJP has sent her as its candidate from Kolkata South. In Raiganj, the party has fielded Karthik Paul, who is in a triangular contest with Congress's Ali Imran Ramaz and TMC's Krishna Kalyani.

Majumdar is fighting TMC's Biplab Mitra in Balurghat, while in Darjeeling Bista is facing TMC's Gopal Lama and Congress's Munish Tamang.

Voting for 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal will be held in seven phases, out of which the first three seats will go to polls on April 19.
