Prime Minister Modi spoke over phone to all the members of the Indian team that defeated South Africa by seven runs and talked about their role in helping the country win its second T20 World Cup title. Virat Kohli top-scored with 76 as India scored 176/7 in 20 overs and then restricted South Africa to 169/8. Soon after India's win, Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket.

Kohli thanked Prime Minister Modi for his encouraging words on social media.

"Dear @narendramodi sir, thank you so much for your kind words and always your support and encouragement. It's a privilege to be a part of this team that has brought the Cup home. We are deeply touched and overwhelmed by this joy." It has brought the entire nation together,” Kohli said in his post on Twitter.

PM Modi praised Kohli for his important innings in the final.

"Dear @imVkohli, it was a pleasure speaking to you. Like in the final innings, you carried the Indian batting brilliantly. You have shone in all formats of the game. You will be missed in T20 cricket but I am sure you will continue To inspire the new generation of players," Modi said in a post on his official handle on Twitter.

Although Kohli has had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup, he has performed well when it mattered most. He scored 76 runs in 59 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes and took over the Indian innings after the dismissals of captain Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession as India were reduced to 34/3 in the fifth over.
