New Delhi [India], The Home Ministry on Monday issued a notification regarding the appointment of acting chairperson in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
According to the notification, Vijaya Bharati Sayani, Member, National Human Rights Commission, will act as Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.
The notification said that the President, under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, authorizes Vijaya Bharati Sayani, Member, National Human Rights Commission, to act as Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. With effect from June 2, 2024, pending the appointment of a new Chairperson to the NHRC to fill such vacancy.
Sayani joined NHRC as a member on December 28 last year.
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, who was the NHRC chairman, retired on June 1. He was appointed as the NHRC chairperson on June 2, 2021.
