Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, in his capacity as chancellor of universities in the state, has directed that university vice-chancellors and other officials filing litigation against his orders should do so at their personal expense.

Khan, in his directive to universities including Kannur and Calicut universities, said their decision to sanction funds for legal expenses incurred in such cases was "not appropriate" and a "misuse of university funds".

He argued that in such cases, university officials were trying to "protect or promote their own personal interests."

He has told universities that 'no steps will be taken to meet the legal expenses of university officials for legal proceedings against the Chancellor or the university.'

Khan told the universities on July 9, "...if any such payment has already been made, the amount will be recovered immediately from the concerned officer on whose behalf the payment was made."

He has also directed the universities to submit details of the decisions taken regarding payment of legal expenses, if any, and the current status of refunds.

According to reports, various universities in the state have spent several thousand to lakhs of rupees on legal expenses incurred by vice-chancellors and other officials while challenging in the courts some of the orders passed by Khan as Chancellor.
