Bengaluru: Veteran Kannada film actor, producer and director Bengal Shama Ra Dwarkanath, popularly known as Dwarakish, died of a heart attack on Tuesday.

Family sources said he was 81 years old.

He acted in about 100 films and produced and directed about 50 films.

Born in Hunsur in Mysore district on August 19, 1942, Dwarakish was known for his comic roles, which made him a household name in the state.

He is also credited with introducing the famous Hindi playback singer Kishore Kuma to the Kannada film industry with the song 'Aadu Aata Aadu'.

Dwarakish, a diploma holder in mechanical engineering, made his debut in tinsel town in 1966 by co-producing "Mamthey Bandhan" under the banner of Thunga Pictures.

He tasted major success as a producer with his film "Mayer Muthanna", starring Kannada matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar and Bharathi in the lead roles.
