Mumbai: The average cost of a vegetarian thali became more expensive by 10 per cent in June due to rising prices of onion, potato and tomato, according to a report released on Friday.

However, a drop in the price of broiler chickens contributed to a decline in the cost of a non-vegetarian meal, according to Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis' monthly 'Rice Roti Rate' report.

The cost of veg thali, comprising roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes and potatoes), rice, dal, curd and salad, rose 10 per cent to Rs 29.4 per plate in June from Rs 26.7 in the same period from the previous year, and was higher compared to Rs 27.8 in May 2024, it said.

The overall rise in vegetarian thali prices is attributed to a 30 per cent increase in tomato prices, 59 per cent increase in potato prices and 46 per cent increase in onion prices.

In the case of onion, there were lower arrivals due to a significant drop in the area under rabi cultivation, while potato saw lower yields due to unseasonal rains in March, he said.

On rising tomato prices, he said virus infestation in the summer crop due to high temperatures in key growing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh reduced tomato arrivals by 35 per cent year-on-year.

Additionally, there was a 13 percent rise in rice prices due to a drop in acreage, resulting in subdued arrivals, while pulse prices rose 22 percent due to a dry spell in the months kharif's key, according to the report.

In the case of the non-vegetarian thali, which contains the same ingredients but the dal is replaced with chicken, the price dropped to Rs 58 in June compared to Rs 60.5 in the same period last year, but was considerably higher in compared to the previous May price of Rs 55.9 per thali.

According to the report, non-vegetarian thali costs declined due to a decline in broiler prices of around 14 per cent year-on-year, oversupply and lower feed cost compared to last year.

The report says that the increase in prices of veg and non-veg meals compared to the previous month was largely due to the increase in prices of vegetables.
