Under this campaign, to prevent forest fires, Pirul (Pin tree leaves) lying in the forest will be collected by local villagers and youth, and then stored in the designated Pirul collection centre, quantified as per weight. Pirul collection centers will be opened in their respective areas by the Tehsildar under the supervision of the Sub-Collector.The Pirul received by the villagers will be weighed. District Magistrate and Divisional Forest Officer will make efforts at the ground level to obtain maximum number of Pirul. This campaign will be run by the Pollution Control Board for which a corpus fund of Rs 50 crore will be kept separately and the villagers will be given money for Pirul from this fund. "Pirul" is a local term for products made from pine in Uttarakhand.Pine needles, also known locally as chir trees, can catch fire rapidly and are a major cause of fires in pine forests. Pine needles are acidic, have little use and fall in large quantities. They take a long time to decompose. They can spread for several kilometers and require only a spark to ignite. In Uttarakhand, an estimated 1.8 million tonnes of pyrrol is produced every year which can cause significant damage to the environment and forest wealth.
