Dehradun: According to Election Commission data, 68.24 percent voting was recorded in Mangalore Assembly by-election in Uttarakhand and 49.80 percent voting was recorded in Badrinath Assembly by-election.

Voting was held in both the assembly constituencies on Wednesday.

The Mangalore by-election had become necessary due to the death of sitting BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari in October last year. The Badrinath seat had fallen vacant after sitting Congress MLA Rajendra Bhandari resigned and joined the BJP in March this year.

According to the latest data released by the Election Commission, 68.24 percent voting took place in Mangalore and 49.80 percent voting took place in Badrinath.

Ansari's son Ubedur Rehman contested against Congress' Qazi Nizamuddin in Mangalore, where four people were injured in a clash between supporters of rival political parties on Wednesday.

The BJP has fielded Gurjar leader Kartar Singh Bhadana from the Muslim-dominated constituency, where the saffron party has never won.

In Badrinath, there was a direct contest between BJP's Rajendra Bhandari and Congress' new candidate Lakhpat Singh Butola.

The fate of 10 candidates in Mangalore and four in Badrinath was sealed in EVMs.

The votes for the by-election will be announced on July 13.
