KATHMANDU, India - The use of renewable energy could revolutionize food security in the mountainous region of the Hindu Kush Himalaya, experts including experts said here on Tuesday.

These comments were made at a regional conference titled “Improved Productive Use of Renewable Energy in Agriculture in the Hindu Kush Himalaya” and organized by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICOMOD) in collaboration with the Center for Alternative Energy Promotion, Nepal.

According to a press release issued by ICIMOD, more than 100 participants, including development partners, civil society members, environmental experts, private sector representatives and government officials from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan attended the conference.

“Rising temperatures are increasing risks to food security in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) mountains. Traditional irrigation methods and limited access to energy are hindering agricultural productivity in these high altitude areas,” experts pointed out.The Hindu Kush Himalaya is a region that extends 3,500 km across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.

The release said clean energy – hydroelectric, solar, biomass and wind – is abundant in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

As rising temperatures pose increasing risks to food security, experts argue it is vital that agriculture, which provides one-fifth of the region's GDP, address changes in yields, food security and a move away from polluting energy. Adopt the potential of renewable energy. Sources said,

During the conference, Dr. Nitin Goyal of India explained in detail how solar energy can be used to set up cold storage systems, a mechanism he has developed in India. Another Indian expert, Professor Abid Haleem, demonstrated the relevance of artificial intelligence in agriculture such as weather forecasting and employing efficient pest plant control systems.Neeraj Shrestha from Nepal gave a presentation on solar thermal applications in agriculture sector of Nepal.

Participants at the conference explored the potential of renewable energy sources to transform mountain farming. The event brought together stakeholders to discuss strategies to scale up these solutions for mountain communities in the HKH region, the release said.

In her keynote address, Shabnam Shivkoti Aryal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, underlined the important role of renewable energy in increasing productivity in the agriculture sector.
