Gorakhpur, A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after being sexually assaulted by four men, one of whom he knew through social media, officials said on Monday.

The accused allegedly recorded the assault that took place at a hotel on Thursday and demanded extortion from the victim and threatened that otherwise they would post the video online, he said.

The victim allegedly committed suicide late on Friday night, hours after the police registered an FIR in the case. His body was found by his family members on Saturday morning.

He said police arrested three accused on Saturday and were still searching for the fourth suspect.FIR lodged against Karan alias Ashutosh Mishra, 26, resident of Chiluatal; Devesh Rajnand, 24, currently resides in the BRD Medical College campus and is originally from Piprauli; Angad Kumar, 21, resident of Chiluatal; and Mohan Prajapati, 20, who is still absconding.

According to the police, the victim was allegedly held hostage in a hotel room in Chiluatal area, where four men sexually assaulted her and beat her with belts.

Superintendent of Police (North) Jitendra Kumar Srivastava said, he was living in a rented house with his brother and preparing for competitive exams.

The SP said that the victim had started a conversation with a person named Karan on a social media platform a month ago. Finally Karan called him to his house in Chiluatal. He said that on Thursday, Karan allegedly took Aditya to a hotel in Rail Vihar, Chiluatal, where three of Karan's associates joined him.

Srivastava said they allegedly sexually assaulted the victim and beat her with a belt when she protested.They allegedly recorded the attack, threatened to release the video on social media and demanded money in exchange for silence.

They also allegedly transferred money through UPI from the victim's phone and purchased beer, the officer said.

The victim initially attempted to lodge a complaint at the Shahpur police station, but the FIR was not registered immediately due to jurisdictional issues between Chiluatal and Shahpur, Srivastava said.

The SP said that on Friday, an FIR was finally registered under sections 377 (unnatural offences), 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

At around 1 am in the night, the victim talked to his nephew.After everyone went to sleep, he allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling. The officer said his family found his body on Saturday morning and informed the police.

Srivastava said that a case has been registered against the four accused under serious sections. Three accused have been arrested and efforts are on to nab the fourth suspect.
