Initiatives like Kisan Kalyan Kendra, Million Farmers program at Nyaya Panchayat level during Rabi and Kharif seasons, and seminars for farmers held from state level to divisional and district level will reiterate this commitment.

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) plays a crucial role in driving this entire programme. Recognizing its importance, the Yogi Adityanath government has set a target of setting up at least one KVK in each district and two in larger districts as required. Seven years ago, many districts lacked such centres, but today there are 89 KVKs across the state.

In the next phase, the Yogi government plans to gradually transform these centers into 'Centres of Excellence'. As part of this initiative, 18 KVKs were selected in the first phase in December 2023, a government spokesperson said.

The project, with a budget of Rs 26.36 crore, has been approved and the first tranche of Rs 3.57 crore has been released.

The selected centers, affiliated with different agricultural universities, represent all regions of the state. Along with their designation as Centers of Excellence, instructions have been given on the specific sectors to focus on, in addition to improving the basic facilities of each center in accordance with agricultural traditions and local climate.

For example, in Gorakhpur, the focus is on horticulture due to the agricultural climate of the region.

According to SP Singh, Principal Scientist, Department of Horticulture, the Terai region presents significant potential for horticulture.

"The focus is on crops such as mango, guava and litchi. The center is currently developing a nursery that will house approximately 12 varieties of mango plants. Farmers are being educated about the distinctive qualities of varieties such as Arunima and Ambika, known for their vibrant colors and easy maintenance due to their compact size."

In addition, seven varieties of guava are promoted based on the local agricultural climate, and the center's nursery also has about two dozen rare plant species.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath aims to make the KVKs self-reliant and employment-oriented, the spokesperson said.

To support this, a conservation unit has been created for the production of pickles, jams, jellies and fruit powders, and training has been provided to women's self-help groups.

The initiatives also include training for garden maintenance. Since it was designated a Center of Excellence, there have been significant improvements to the infrastructure.

The districts selected for KVK Centers of Excellence include Mau, Balrampur, Gorakhpur, Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Banda, Hamirpur, Bijnor, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Meerut, Rampur, Badaun, Aligarh, Etawah, Fatehpur and Mainpuri.
