Kanpur (UP), Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki, his younger brother and three others were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on Friday for setting fire to a woman's house to grab her land.

Police had registered a case of rioting and arson against Irfan Solanki, his brother Rizwan Solanki and about four dozen others 19 months ago.

The sessions MP-MLA court headed by Justice Satyendra Nath Tripathi on Monday convicted the MLA, his brother, as well as Shaukat Ali, Mohammed Sharif and Israel, while the sentence was pronounced on Friday.

District government lawyer Dilip Awasthi said that the court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,500 on each of the convicts, failing which they will have to undergo three more months in jail.

Irfan Solanki is a four-time MLA, who was first elected from Arya Nagar in 2007. He also won from Sisamau assembly constituency in 2012, 2017 and 2022 elections. His father Mushtaq Solanki was also a two-time MLA from Arya Nagar assembly constituency of Kanpur.
