Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Four people were burnt alive in a moving car after a vehicle caught fire near Meerut, police said on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Lalit (20), Rajni (40), Radha (29) and Kavita (50).

“Late yesterday evening, a car going from Ghaziabad to Haridwar suddenly caught fire. Four people traveling in the car died on the spot. Passersby informed the police, after which police and fire brigade teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Postmortem is being conducted and DNA samples are being preserved for identification, said Senior Superintendent of Police (Meerut) Rohit Singh.

The official said the cause of the incident is believed to be a malfunction of the modified CNG installed in the car.

Further investigation is underway.
