According to reports, this is the second heaviest kidney tumor to be removed in India.

The patient is expected to be discharged next week.

The surgery, performed on June 27, took four hours and involved a complex procedure to remove the tumor that had spread to a major nerve.

The 56-year-old patient, Madhuri, a resident of Sahjana village in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, was suffering from severe stomach pain for two years before getting diagnosed at RMLIMS.

Before her family brought her to RMLIMS, Madhuri sought treatment from various hospitals without any relief.

Doctors in the urology department recommended a CT scan, which revealed a 30 cm tumor in his left kidney.

Alok Srivastava, chief surgeon at RMLIMS, said the tumor had spread to a major vein, the inferior vena cava, which is responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from the lower limbs and abdomen back to the heart.

"This is the second heaviest kidney tumor removed in India. The heaviest, which weighed six kilograms, was removed at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in 2019," Srivastava said.

In 2016, the case of removal of a 5.4 kg tumor from the kidney of a 28 year old woman at Sion Hospital in Mumbai is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
