Meerut (UP), Police on Saturday said two hundred people have been booked for allegedly creating traffic jam by offering namaz on the road here.

As the space inside the nearby mosque was filled, the crowd came out on the road to offer Eid prayers. When he was stopped from offering Namaz on the road, he allegedly clashed with the police, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan) said that the sub-inspector of Railway Road police station lodged a complaint against Frida that more than 100 to 200 people offered Eid prayers on Thursday, causing serious traffic jam.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant), 18 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duty) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. FIR has been registered. Sajwan said.

"An FIR has been lodged against unknown persons. Our teams are trying to identify the accused with the help of CCTV footage in the area," he said.
