New Delhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of people in a road accident in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh and urged the administration to provide all possible help to the affected people.

He also appealed to workers of the India Bloc, including Congress and Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties, to provide assistance to the victims of the accident.

Eighteen people were killed and 19 injured when a double-decker sleeper bus hit a milk tanker on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Unnao on Wednesday, officials said.

The accident occurred near Jojikot village of Behta Mujawar police station area at around 5 in the morning.

The Congress chief said, "We wish speedy recovery to all those injured in the accident. The administration is requested to leave no stone unturned in helping the victims."

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that the news of death of many people in the tragic road accident in Unnao is very sad.

"I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Government is requested to provide full assistance to the families of the victims and provide all possible assistance in the treatment of the injured "Cooperation with the administration in relief and rescue operations is requested," Gandhi, an India Block activist, said in a Facebook post.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "May the departed souls rest in peace. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured."
