Lakhimpur Kheri (UP): Five people, including a child, were killed and eight injured when a speeding van collided with an oncoming Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus on the Lakhimpur-Bahraich highway on Sunday, police said.

Lakhimpur Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramesh Kumar Tiwari told media persons that the van was going towards Lakhimpur from Bahraich when it collided with a state roadways bus coming from Lakhimpur near Nakaha village.

The DSP said four passengers of the van, including a child, died on the spot, while another passenger died on the way to the hospital.

Of the eight injured, the condition of six people is said to be critical. He said that all the injured have been sent to the district hospital.

Kheri District Magistrate Mahendra Bahadur Singh and Superintendent of Police Ganesh Prasad Saha reached the spot and took stock of the situation. He also visited the district hospital and reviewed the treatment of injured persons by the medical staff.
