Ahmedabad: Parts of Gujarat witnessed unseasonal rain on Monday as a dust storm accompanied by strong winds lashed Ahmedabad, causing inconvenience to commuters returning home from work.

The weather department has predicted light rain and thundershowers in several districts over the next three days, and the state agriculture department has issued an advisory asking farmers to take precautionary measures to protect their crops from unseasonal rain.

Ahmedabad witnessed a sudden change in weather on Monday evening as light rain coupled with strong winds and dust storm reduced visibility in the city in the evening.

Hoardings were damaged in Ahmedabad and a mobile tower was uprooted in Gandhinagar, although there were no reports of any casualties.

The sudden change in weather also brought relief from the scorching heat.According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad will fall to 41 degrees Celsius.

Strong winds and dust storm were witnessed in other parts of the state including Amreli, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, while some areas received rain along with hailstorm.

According to the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), parts of Surendranagar, Botad, Navsari, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Bhavnagar, Dangs and Gandhinagar received rain in the afternoon and evening.

He said that during this period, Sayla in Surendranagar received 21 mm rainfall and Botad received 20 mm rainfall.

In its latest forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said light rain with lightning at isolated places over Aravalli, Dahod Mahisagar, Dangs, Valsad, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Anand, Bharuch and Surat in the next two days. There is a possibility of a storm.

An official said the untimely rains forced the state agriculture department to issue an advisory to farmers to take precautionary measures to protect their crops.In view of the forecast, the state agriculture department has advised farmers to take measures to avoid crop loss.

Farmers should immediately move their produce and harvested crops to a safe place or cover them with plastic/tarpaulin, the department said in a release.

The department has also advised farmers to avoid spraying pesticides and fertilizers on crops during rains.

It said traders and farmers have been advised to avoid or keep safe the products coming for sale in APMCs.
