New Delhi, UNM Foundation and Ahmedabad-based UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Center have joined hands to provide financial assistance for heart transplant to needy patients.

Under the terms of the agreement, the UNM Foundation will provide full financial support to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Center (UNMICRC) to perform heart transplants to needy patients, free of charge.

Patients suffering from advanced heart failure, unresponsive to guideline-directed medical therapy and who lack the financial means to afford necessary treatment will be eligible for this financial assistance, the UNM Foundation said in a statement.

UNM Foundation, named after Torrent Group founder UN Mehta, is a charitable arm of the Mehta family.

Heart transplant surgery and the care required after the operation are expensive and generally out of range for underprivileged patients. This first-of-its-kind collaboration in the country aims to reduce the financial burden on underprivileged families facing the devastating challenge of advanced heart failure.

“This unique initiative of the UNM Foundation is a ray of hope for the countless families who need a heart transplant but lack the financial means to do so. By providing comprehensive financial assistance, we are not only saving lives but also ensuring "We are ensuring that the highest quality of medical care is accessible to those who need it most," said Chirag Doshi, director of UNMICRC.

UNMICRC will announce patient eligibility criteria. The initiative will be effective for an initial period of five years from June 1, 2024.
