Tinsukia (Assam), Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP candidate for Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency on Monday urged ULFA (Independent) to come for talks and resolve all issues through discussion.

In an interview before beginning his day's campaign in the assembly constituencies of Tinsukia district within his constituency, Sonowal stressed the dedicated efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Ami Shah towards restoring peace in the state. .

Sonowal said, "We always want ULFA to come forward for talks. Let us sit together and discuss to find an amicable solution."

He highlighted the Prime Minister's commitment to promoting peace and development in the entire North-Eastern region, citing the serious efforts made by both Modi and the Home Minister in the last decade."During the last ten years, both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have made serious efforts to bring peace in the state and the region," the Shipping Ports, Waterways and AYUSH Minister said.

The agreement has been signed with the pro-talk faction of ULFA, which was disbanded earlier this year, and all groups of NDFB, Dimasa and Karab rebel organisations.

ULFA(I) is the only insurgent organization in Assam which is yet to be discussed.

Asked about Dibrugarh and Tinsukia being former centers of ULFA activities, Sonova remarked that those days are now in the past.

He commented, "If there is peace, there will be development and progress. The peaceful environment promotes motivation for hard work, thereby increasing earning potential for people from all walks of life."

Sonowal reaffirmed his commitment to continue the transformative efforts started by Modi.

"Change is being felt in the region due to Modiji's efforts and will continue to do so even after he becomes Prime Minister for the third consecutive time," Sonowal said.

The Union minister is contesting the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat for the third time, having first wrested the seat from the Congress in 2004 as the Aso Gana Parishad candidate.

He lost the seat to a Congress candidate in 2009 and moved to Lakhimpur in 2011, from where he won and became a minister of state in Modi's first cabinet. He became the Chief Minister of Assam in 2016 and currently after succeeding Himanta Biswa Sarma, he became a Rajya Sabha member in 2021.

Sonowal replaced sitting BJP MP and Union minister Rameshwar Teli as the party's Dibrugarh candidate.

He is locked in a triangular contest with the other two candidates being Assam Jatiya Parishad's Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the Joint Opposition Forum candidate and Aam Aadmi Party's contender.
