Sriramula Srinivas (38) was working as a sub-inspector at Aswaraopet police station in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

Unable to bear the harassment by his senior officer and four colleagues, he consumed pesticide in Mahabubabad on June 30.

S-I died in the early hours at a private hospital in Hyderabad. Hailing from Warangal district, he is survived by his wife, seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old son.

A magistrate recorded the statement of a Dalit police officer, in which he explained the reasons for the suicide attempt.

On the complaint of Srinivas' wife Krishnaveni, the police have already registered a case against circle inspector (CI) Jitendra Reddy, constable Sanyasi Naidu, Subhani, Shekhar and Shiva Nagaraju. All of them were booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The S-I's family alleged that the CI and four others tried to portray him as a corrupt officer and also published newspaper reports against him. Two charge memos were reportedly given against him.

Srinivas was transferred from Manuguru police station to Aswaraopet police station in February this year.

Dalit organizations have demanded strict action against those responsible for SI's death.

Mala Mahanadu State President Pilli Sudhakar said that harassment and discrimination against Dalit officers has increased in the police system.

Meanwhile, higher officials have transferred CI Jeetendra Reddy. He was attached to the Inspector General's Office. Four constables have also been attached to the SP office.
