The Tass news agency quoted a statement from the FSB as saying that the agency also found the involvement of NATO special services in the preparation and implementation of the operation.

Ukrainian intelligence had planned to persuade a Russian military pilot to fly to and land a missile carrier in Ukraine with the promise of a monetary reward and Italian citizenship, Xinhua news agency reported, citing an FSB statement.

During the operation, Russian counterintelligence also received information that helped it conduct a fire strike on a Ukrainian airport, it said.

The Tu-22M3 is a long-range supersonic missile carrier bomber with variable-sweep wings designed to attack sea and land targets with guided missiles and bombs. It can carry both nuclear and conventional bombs and missiles.
