Udupi (Karnataka) The coastal district of Udupi is facing an acute shortage of compressed natural gas for automotive applications.

Although the number of CNG fuel based vehicles is increasing, the number of CN filling stations in Udupi district has not increased. There is not as much supply as demand in existing banks. Due to this, drivers, especially rickshaw pullers, have to wait for hours to fill their fuel tanks.

“I have been waiting for at least four-five hours every day for the last one week. Most of the time my vehicle remains idle and I am not able to afford the fare, resulting in a huge loss in my income and if this continues it will now impact my bank obligations,” says Sundar Shetty, a rickshaw puller from Udupi. CNG fuel is not being supplied as per the demand in the existing banks. Leaders of the CN Autorickshaw Drivers Association said due to high demand the stock gets exhausted quickly and sometimes rickshaws have to stand in queues overnight to refuel in the morning.

There is only one cot in Udupi city which has CNG facility, but most of the time it remains empty.

"Due to the high investment on land, equipment and daily stock, there are no takers for this business," the bunk owners said.

There is only one CNG station in Kundapura taluk out of three in Udupi district. There are more than 5,000 CNG based vehicles in the district.

It is very common to see hundreds of rickshaws and other vehicles waiting to get CNG fuel filled at the CNG bank in Koteshwar every day from 4 am onwards.

Many times one has to wait till 8-9 o'clock. However, there is no guarantee that everyone will get fuel. Similar situation prevails in Karkala and Kundpu taluks of Udupi district.

Rickshaw pullers and other CNG users have appealed to Udupi district authorities and approached the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry to put pressure on the government to normalize the supply and open more bunks.
