New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that if the BJP returns to power, a Uniform Civil Code will be implemented for the entire country within the next five years after extensive consultations with all stakeholders.

In a wide-ranging interview with PTI, Shah said the Modi government will also implement 'one nation, one election' in its next term as the time has come to hold simultaneous elections in the country.

The senior BJP leader further said that simultaneous elections will also reduce costs.

Asked about the possibility of holding elections in winter or at some other time of the year instead of the present scorching summer, Shah said, "We can consider it. If we hold an election earlier, it can be done." Is.It should be done. It is also the time of students' holidays. With time, the elections (Lok Sabha) gradually moved to this period.''

Talking about the Uniform Civil Code, Shah said, “The UCC is a responsibility left by our Constitution makers on us, our Parliament and the state legislatures of our country since independence.,

"The guiding principles set out for us by the Constituent Assembly include the Uniform Civil Code. And even at that time, legal scholars like KM Munshi Rajendra Babu, Ambedkar ji had said that in a secular country there should not be religion-based laws. Uniform There should be a civil code,” he said.

The Union Home Minister said that the BJP has conducted an experiment in Uttarakhand where it has a majority government because it is a subject of states and the Centre.

UCC has been on the BJP's agenda since the 1950s and was recently enacted in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand. He said, "I believe that the Uniform Civil Code is a huge social, legal and religious reform. There should be a socio-legal scrutiny of the law made by the Uttarakhand government. Religious leaders should also be consulted."

“What I mean to say is that there should be a wide debate on this. And after this wide debate, what changes have to be made in the model law made by the Uttarakhand government.Because someone will definitely go to court. The opinion of the judiciary will also come.

"After that, the state assemblies and Parliament of the country should consider it seriously and make a law. Therefore we have written in our 'Sankalp Patra' that the BJP aims to create a uniform civil code for the entire country. " He said.Asked whether this could be done within the next five years, Shah said it would be done within this period. “Five years is a sufficient period,” he said.

Asked about simultaneous elections, Shah said, "We will make every effort to achieve 'one nation, one election'. This should also be discussed."

He said, “The Prime Minister had constituted the Ram Nath Kovind Committee. I was also a member of it.Its report has been submitted. Now the time has come that elections should be held simultaneously in the country."

Asked if a bill on this could be introduced in the next session if the BJP returns to power, Shah said, "Our resolution is for five years. We will bring it during this period."

In its manifesto for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has said that Article 44 of the Constitution lists the Uniform Civil Code as one of the Directive Principles of State Policy.
