Two warders of the Central Jail in Agartala, Tripura have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the escape of a convict serving life imprisonment in a murder case. An official provided this information on Wednesday.

Swarn Kumar Tripura, who was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty in a murder case, escaped from jail on Tuesday morning.

The convict had earlier escaped from Central Jail in 2016 and Kanchanapu sub-jail in 2022.

Vishalgarh sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rakesh Chakraborty, who is the jail superintendent, on Tuesday filed an FIR against two jail warders, Mofiz Mia and Tapan Rupini, after conducting a preliminary investigation.

"On a priority basis, both the warders were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly trying to escape a prisoner serving life imprisonment," the SDM said.

Chakraborty said security would be increased inside the jail premises after the prisoner's escape.

"Apart from the deployment of jail police personnel, several CCTV cameras have already been installed in the jail premises. We will review the security of the Jai premises and take remedial measures if any lapses are found during the review exercise," he said.

Officer in-charge (OC) of Bishalgarh police station, Rana Chatterjee, said, "We are taking all possible measures to arrest the culprit. The places where he may have taken shelter have already been investigated."
