New Delhi: Two assailants who allegedly shot dead a 35-year-old man in broad daylight in Seelampur area here, were arrested on Thursday. Police gave this information.

He said the accused – Salman and Shoaib, both in their 20s – committed the crime to gain notoriety as part of a local gang.

"On April 12, a 35-year-old man, identified as Shahnawaz, was shot dead in a market in broad daylight. The accused shot him in the back of the head and fled from the scene. An eyewitness said Shahnawaz He was walking on the road when he was shot,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey.

He said the victim was initially taken to JPC Hospital, from where he was referred to LNJP Hospital.

The bullet had passed through the victim's head, the DCP said.

Police said a juvenile already arrested in this case revealed the names of the other two accused.

DCP Tirkey said that after Shahnawaz's death at LNJP Hospital on April 13, an FIR of attempt to murder was initially registered, the section of murder was added in the case.

"Our team later nabbed a juvenile from Seelampur area on April 14. The other two accused, Salman and Shoaib, were also arrested on Thursday," Tirke said.

He said that two country-made pistols and two live cartridges have been recovered from the possession of the accused.

“They wanted to become famous as a gang and were planning to extort money from Shahnawaz, so they attacked him,” the DCP said.

He said Salman and Shoaib were earlier involved in two cases of attempt to murder and robbery.
