Agartala (Tripura) [India], Child marriage remains a serious issue in Tripura, where many girls are married before the legal age of 18. To address this, Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TCPCR) has stepped up initiatives focusing on this. Sharmila Chaudhary, TCPR member on prevention and intervention, said the commission is running awareness campaigns to educate communities about the adverse effects of child marriage. These include interactive sessions, media outreach and distribution of informational materials, he said, adding, “The issues of child marriage are of great concern in Tripura. Whenever we get information about child marriage, first of all, we contact the concerned area DIC and Child Inform the helpline staff.“Then we inform the concerned SDM and reach the location with our team along with the police personnel of the concerned police station,” Choudhary said. He said the objective of TCPCR is to save all minor girls and boys from child marriage. “Whenever we talk to those families, they usually make the excuse of financial problems and whenever there is another boy in the same family, they make the excuse that the boy will grow up and bring income. Therefore, we make such parents aware that there are certain laws in the country and these are only for the betterment of the children." Legal enforcement is also a priority, with strict action being taken against violators to ensure compliance with the law. Support systems for at-risk children and families are also being expanded, offering helplines, counseling and access to education and vocational training.Despite these efforts, greater community participation and awareness are necessary, and while progress is being made, eradication of child marriage in Tripura requires sustained efforts and collaboration. Choudhary said, TCPR is committed to protecting the rights and future of young girls in the state.
