Forest Minister Debbarma said that in the first phase, five lakh saplings will be planted in a day in the first week of July across the state, while in the subsequent phases, 10 lakh more saplings will be planted.

Debbarma, who also holds the Science Technology and Environment portfolio, said Tripura's current forest cover is more than 62 per cent which is good compared to other states in the country.

“We are keen to further expand the forest cover in Tripura to address the growing challenges related to climate change,” he told the media.

Appealing to people, various organizations and clubs to come forward and join hands with the forest department to make the massive tree plantation drive a success, Debbarma said the government will try to involve all stakeholders in its efforts.

He said that while many trees have been cut for the expansion of National Highways, State Highways and various developmental projects, the Forest Department is making every possible effort to expand the forest area through new plantations.
