Agartala, Food and Supplies Minister Sushant Chaudhary said on Monday that the Tripura government will start purchasing paddy directly from farmers from June 15.

He said that paddy would be procured at the minimum support price of Rs 21.83 per kg and the process would continue till July 15.

"The state government has decided to purchase 15,000 metric tonnes of paddy at MSP of Rs 21.83 per kg from farmers in 31 blocks of six districts. The process will start from June 15 and will continue till July 15," Chaudhary told reporters.

Apart from Chaudhary, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia will flag off the paddy procurement process in Julaibari in South Tripura district.

Choudhary said that there has been a radical change in the economic condition of the farmers due to the purchase of paddy.

The minister said that the amount will be sent to the farmers' accounts within 24 hours of purchase.

Chaudhary, who also holds the transport portfolio, said the Center could not declare Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport as international because of the Model Code of Conduct in force.

"After the Home Ministry provides immigration facilities at the airport, international service from Agartala to Chittagong in Bangladesh will start," he said.
