Agartala (Tripura) [India], Tripura Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Sushant Choudhary said the state government will launch its annual subsidized paddy procurement program on June 15. The aim of this initiative is to financially support farmers in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Minister Sushant Chaudhary said, "Tripura state government will launch its annual subsidized paddy procurement program on June 15, with a target of 16,000 metric tonnes of paddy at Rs 2183 per quintal. The initiative will run till July 31. The aim is to support farmers financially." With a sum of Rs 35 crore by the central government and reimbursement of Rs 10 crore from the state treasury for operational costs, 31 temporary procurement centers will be set up, and five new goods trucks will be added to the food grain delivery fleet.Minister Sushant Choudhary stressed the importance of the program in enhancing the livelihood and economic stability of farmers.

Chaudhary said, "In a continued effort to provide economic stability and self-reliance to farmers, the state government is set to launch its annual subsidized paddy procurement program for the Rabi season 2023-24. The programme, which started in December 2018 ", will begin on June 15 in Shantirbazar sub-division of South Tripura district and will continue till July 31."

He said that the total expenditure on this initiative is estimated to be around Rs 2,000 crore. Whose reimbursement will be Rs 35 crore by the Central Government.

He further said, “This year the government aims to purchase 16,000 metric tonnes of paddy from farmers at the support price of Rs 2183 per quintal, which is the rate fixed by the Government of India.The total expenditure on this initiative is estimated to be around Rs 35 crore, which will be reimbursed by the Central Government. An additional Rs 10 crore will be allocated from the state treasury to cover the operational costs.

He said that since its inception, the program has successfully procured 1.93 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, directly transferring Rs. Rs 372 crore into the bank accounts of farmers, thus ensuring fair prices and financial security for the farming community."In support of this initiative, the State will open 31 temporary paddy procurement centers in different areas. The Food Department has also taken measures to increase the efficiency of distribution of food grains to the consumers of the Public Distribution System and increase the variety of ration items, the Department said. has expanded its fleet with the purchase of five new cargo trucks at a cost of approximately Rs 1.86 crore.

He said that these new trucks will be flagged off tomorrow at the Central Store located at AD Nagar, Agartala.

“Additionally, the State Government has completed the construction of a new Secondary Standard Laboratory building at Shantirbazar sub-division, funded by the Central Government.The facility will be officially inaugurated on June 15, 2024, further strengthening the infrastructure to support farming. community,” he added.

Minister Sushant Chaudhary highlighted the importance of these initiatives in a press conference, emphasizing the government's commitment to improving the livelihood of farmers and ensuring timely distribution of essential food grains across the state.
