AGARTALA: The Tripura government has decided to ban registration of all types of three-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) from July 10, an official said.

The official said the move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in civic body areas and promoting alternative transport systems.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 115 of the MV Act 1988 and in the interest of promoting sustainable urban mobility, the Transport Department, Government of Tripura hereby bans the registration of all types of three-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles in West Tripura in Agartala Municipal Corporation area of ​​the district from July 10, 2024,” the notification issued on Monday said.

It clarified that all three-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles include e-rickshaws, e-carts, e-autos, petrol autos, diesel autos, CNG autos and vehicles running on bio-fuels (methanol and ethanol).

In West Tripura district, 23,474 three-wheelers and 4259 e-rickshaws were registered with the transport department and 70 of these vehicles are plying in the capital city.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Traffic, Manik said, “In a recent meeting held with Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior officials on traffic management in Agartala, we highlighted the problem of huge increase in movement of three-wheelers, which is causing traffic snarls. Problems are arising." Das said on Tuesday.

“The government might have taken action on our concerns,” the SP said.
