Agartala, Tripura government has issued an alert in all eight districts after the Indian Meteorological Department warned of heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds and storm in the next 48 hours. An official gave this information on Saturday.

IMD said that the pressure generated in the Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm on Saturday.

Additional Secretary (Revenue) Tamal Majumdar said, "Due to the impact of the cyclonic storm, heavy rains and strong winds are likely to occur over Tripura from May 25 to May 28."

He said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in South Tripura, Gomti, Dhalai, Sipahijala and West Tripura districts on May 26. "Orange alert has been issued in these districts as a precautionary measure," he said.

"Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph, heavy rainfall very likely over South Tripura, Gomti, Dhalai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts on May 27," he said.

"There is a possibility of lightning, strong winds and heavy rain in North Tripura, Unakoti and Dhalai districts on May 28," he said.

"All district magistrates have been directed to take precautionary measures to deal with any unexpected situation. They have been asked to keep NDRF, SDRF, Tripura State Rifles and fire services and essential services on standby in view of the alert," he said. " ,
