Agartala (Tripura) [India], Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Thursday said that more than 78,000 farmers in the state affected by cyclone "Midhili" have received financial assistance from the government.

To compensate the losses suffered by the farmers, the state government has released Rs 22 crore through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

Speaking exclusively to ANI after the formal inauguration of the distribution programme, Nath said, "In November 2023, farmers suffered huge losses under the impact of Cyclone Midhili. All types of crops like paddy, vegetables etc were destroyed in the fields Following the cyclone, the Agriculture Department conducted a survey of the state and forwarded our findings to the Revenue Department of Tripura, after studying our reports the department sanctioned funds worth Rs 22 crore, which are now directly transferred to the bank accounts of the farmers. According to the minister, similar programs were organized at 39 places across the state in the presence of MLAs, ministers and local elected representatives.

“More than 11,000 farmers gathered in those events and the entire amount was released in a single day,” he said.

The minister also announced an increase in the wages of agricultural labourers.

"This is an important announcement. In the financial year 2017-18, the wages for agricultural laborers were Rs 177. In the last six years after the BJP came to power in Tripura, the wages were revised six times.
