Kolkata: A woman was beaten up by passengers traveling in a local train on suspicion of being a child lifter at Birti station in North 24 Parganas, Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

A GRP official said the woman was rescued from the mob by Railway Police personnel, who alleged that she had picked up the child.

The officer said the woman claimed to be the mother of the child and hailed from the neighboring state and lived in Dumdum area of North 24 Parganas district.

The officer said the girl seemed comfortable with him but the GRP personnel were still investigating the allegations and escorted her to her residence in Dumdum.

One of the passengers said that the passengers became suspicious because when they asked about her relationship with the child the woman could not give coherent answers to their questions.

As soon as the news of the woman taking the life of her child spread, the passengers beat up the woman and blocked the railway track for 15 minutes.

To save the woman, GRP had to resort to lathi charge.

The incident comes just after at least three cases of strangers being thrashed by mobs in different areas of North 24 Parganas district on suspicion of being child lifters.

Police have repeatedly asked people not to be influenced by such rumors and have arrested some people for spreading fake news of child theft on social media.
